Continental EcoContact 7 Is Now Standard Fit on the New Electric Renault Twingo

Renault’s latest all-electric Twingo will be fitted exclusively with Continental’s EcoContact 7 as original equipment, Continental confirmed this week. The global approval covers all markets where the compact electric car is sold, in a single size: 205/45 R18 90H XL FR.

Why this size, why this tyre?

A 205/45 R18 is a notably wide, large-diameter choice for a compact city car — a sign that Renault’s engineers prioritised aerodynamic efficiency and stability over a smaller profile. The EcoContact 7 holds top EU tyre label ratings for both rolling resistance and rolling noise, two metrics EV makers weigh heavily when selecting OE fitments. With no combustion engine to mask tyre noise at low speeds, urban noise character matters more for electric cars than for their combustion equivalents.

Three technologies behind the OE approval

According to Continental’s press release, the EcoContact 7 combines three specific engineering features in this application:

  • Smart Energy Casing — new materials in the carcass, liner, and sidewall reduce internal friction, cutting rolling resistance.
  • Aerodimple — the sidewall features dimples modelled on golf ball aerodynamics. The dimples reduce turbulent airflow around the rolling tyre, lowering the energy the car needs to keep it moving.
  • Silent Pattern — tread block spacing and angles are tuned for the lower-frequency noise generated at the urban speeds typical for a compact city car.

Context: EcoContact 7 and range optimisation

The EcoContact 7 has been at the centre of Continental’s EV-focused tyre strategy in 2026. In a separate collaboration announced last week, Continental and Renault Group demonstrated a research prototype based on a modified EcoContact 7 compound with rolling resistance 35% lower than the EU label’s A rating, translating to around 30 extra kilometres on a 500 km battery. That prototype is not the production tyre going on the Twingo, but it illustrates the direction Continental is pursuing with this platform.

What it means for drivers

Renault Twingo electric buyers will receive the EcoContact 7 from the factory regardless of which market they buy in — the approval is global. When it comes to replacing the OE tyres, the 205/45 R18 EcoContact 7 is the matching specification. Continental has not published an RRP for this size, but it is widely available through independent tyre retailers. Drivers considering aftermarket alternatives should note that the Aerodimple and Silent Pattern features are specific to this generation of EcoContact — older EcoContact 6 fitments will not replicate the noise or efficiency profile tuned for this vehicle.
